We had a bit of a play around the other night trying to capture the fantastic baby rolls Callum is developing. Just love this little chubster.

The Vargas Family

10 April 2013 | Family, Children

Brayden came to hang out with us recently. He was a little shy to start out with, but once we pulled out some toys he warmed up to us. Him and Gareth became good buddies when Gareth started juggling – Brayden was really impressed!

Thanks for spending the afternoon with us guys!

Callum – 2 Months Old

8 April 2013 | Personal, Family

Little Mr. Roughley is already 2 months old (as of last Tuesday). And at the risk of sounding completely cliche – time really has flown. We had every intention of doing a 1 month post, but just as that hit, Callum came down with his first cold, which was scary, as any new parent can agree.

Once we got over that little hump, life has been a whole new world. I cannot imagine our lives without our third, he makes us laugh every day with his signature scowl and crazy faces. To say being a mom is the best thing ever is an understatement. We’ve traveled and seen the world, but nothing I have done compares to this. I was told by someone that this is the best reason to be exhausted. I couldn’t agree more.

Enjoy our little man. We sure are.

Fun in Snowy Edmonton

15 March 2013 | Couples, Maternity, Weddings, Engagement

Just a peek for you at what we’ve been working on this past week:

A gorgeous mamma to be
A wedding with the perfect First Look
An engagement shoot complete with balloons, flowers and a massive life-sized cheque!

The snow doesn’t keep us from getting out and shooting! Our clients are true Canadians, willing to brave the cold to get the perfect shot.

And on a personal note, I’m LOVING being able to bend and crouch and move again during shoots!

Have a wonderful weekend,
Shauna

International Women’s Day – 2013

9 March 2013 | Personal, Family, Weddings

Today is International Women’s Day – a day to appreciate the impact women have on our lives, a day to realize the strides that have been made towards equal opportunity for women, and a day to remember that there is still a long way to go. As discussed in a recent BBC News article – Viewpoint: What if women ruled the world?, it was not so long ago when the prevailing opinion was that “women clearly lacked the intellectual capacity and emotional fortitude to make the difficult decisions that leadership required.”

Times are changing; women are no longer “just” house wives.  If we start with this belief we see the first contradiction. Women have always been trusted to run our homes, raise our children and begin their education. If we trust them to raise and educate our children as the leaders of tomorrow, why not trust them to educate our cities, counties and nations? Thankfully this road has been forged by inspirational women that have come before us, and women today continue to follow their lead.

In a city and province dominated by the oil industry we are surrounded by male ego often personified by a set of steel testicles on the back of a jacked up pickup truck. To outsiders this creates a stereotype of life in our blue collar city. In reality intelligent, driven women have to be strong willed and confident enough to be heard in this male-dominated city. Shauna and I are lucky enough to meet many of these amazing women as we photograph their lives. They are role models who we celebrate today, and who we thank everyday for allowing us to share in their lives and their stories.

On this women’s day remember to set a positive example, to have the self belief and strength of character for the next generation. Character comes from within creating a radiance that far outshines the false body images we are led to believe are important.
I would not be the person I am today if not for the women in my life, I hope you feel the same way too.

Gareth

p.s. Happy mothers day mum (it’s mothers day in the UK this Sunday)

Nicole & Danny ~ Engagement ~

7 March 2013 | Couples, Engagement

I cannot believe how much I have neglected this blog in the last few months! Lately we have had a little one at home that just loves to cuddle, so when we haven’t been shooing I’ve been hanging out with him. We have tons to share with you, from way back in the summer, so I’ll do my best to get some photos up here.

Nicole and Danny are two amazing friends. We heard they were getting married while we were sitting in a motor home on a rainy day in New Zealand. We were so excited, and a million questions were immediately asked; the boys sat by as Nicole and I talked a mile a minute, as we always do. Saying this Skype chat made me homesick was an understatement. It was moments like that that made me want to come home and be around the people I loved. Once we hung up I almost immediately got a text message saying “Oh, and will you be my bridesmaid?”

Of course! I was beyond honoured to be asked to stand by this beautiful girl.

The next one: “And will you and Gareth do our photos?” …that would prove to be a challenge being a bridesmaid, but yes! We were up to the challenge.

Fast forward 7 months, when we found out we were pregnant, and the due date was within weeks of the wedding…but we’ll save that story for another day. We saved their engagement photos for a beautiful fall afternoon, and what could be better than hanging out with friends capturing this time in their life?

Love you both.

Meet Callum

21 February 2013 | Personal, Family, Children

We’ve been pretty quiet on the blog the past little while. I do apologize! But we have been a little preoccupied. We spent January anxiously awaiting February to come…and we have spent February getting to know this new little man in our lives.

Everyone, meet the newest member of the Roughley team – Callum. Our little guy was born on February 5 at 3:51 am. He had to wait until Gareth’s birthday passed (February 4) so he could have his own day. Since then he has been making us laugh with his hilarious faces and his squirmy energy, and he’s been keeping me warm with his cuddles. He’s a keeper, and we’re so excited to watch him grow.

Thanks for understanding if we’ve been slow to get back to you. He’s quite distracting.

Lots of love,

Shauna, Gareth & Callum
